Django Girls Basel @ EuroPython

Would you like to know about how to build websites, how the internet works and would you like to try programming your own first blog, but don’t know where to start? We have good news for you: we are holding a one-day workshop for beginners!

Django Girls Basel is part of Django Girls, a worldwide volunteer driven initiative that is aiming to introduce women who have never coded before to the world of technology and increase diversity. We believe that technology is for people and everyone should be able to build it. That is why we want to give you an opportunity to learn how to program and start creating things.

The first Django Girls workshop was held at EuroPython 2014. Since then the EuroPython Society has sponsored a Django Girls workshop every year.

The workshop will be held on Monday, July 8th in the EuroPython 2019 conference venue FHNW Campus Muttenz from 9:30am-5pm.

What to expect

During the workshop you will work through a tutorial in a small group of three attendees and one coach. Our coaches are software developers who contribute their time, knowledge and energy for you and Django Girls.

We'll be following the Django Girls tutorial - an awesome tutorial that leads you through building your own blog from scratch! The workshop tutorial has been translated into different languages, for sure you will find one for you. Our coaches speak English and one or two other languages too. All you need is a working laptop, and we'll help you with the rest.

Being our attendee, you will:

  • take part in our one day workshop, learning how to program your own website from scratch.
  • get to know something about programming and internet technologies.
  • meet great people and have loads of fun :)

You can attend the workshop for free! Your motivation counts, let us know about it in your application.

Registering for the workshop

The workshop is open to any woman* who would like to attend! If you are not sure, if you belong to our target group, you might want to ask yourself the following question: Imagine a group composed of you and 20 persons randomly selected from all people who identify as "male". Would you consider yourself to be in a (gender) minority within that group? If "yes", you can safely assume to be in our "primary target group".

The workshop is aimed at people with little or no programming experience, but may also be useful if you've learned a different discipline (like data science) and would like to learn how to build websites with Django.

Django Girls is dedicated to providing a harassment-free workshop experience for everyone, regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, or religion. Every participant needs to follow the Code of Conduct.

The workshop is free to attend, but you have to apply and be accepted. We only have 30 seats available for the workshop, and we'll pick the best applicants based on the information you provide on the form.

Workshop coaches

We can't run this workshop without coaches! A coach will be assigned to each group of 3 attendees. Their job is to support and encourage their team as they work through the DjangoGirls tutorial at their own pace.

You'll have the extremely fun and rewarding experience of helping your team take their first steps in Python and Django. If you'd like to apply to be a coach, please sign up here.
